Herb Lubalin

Herb Lubalin

Herb Lubalin, is a designer that specialises in the field of type design, I found quite a fondness to this type design, Herb Lubalin's approach to type design I feel is inspiring weather I choose him as one of the 3 artists or not his work is very inspiring for even just logo designs or ways I can incorporate some of his tactics in a similar way in my work.

This graphic designer was suggested to me to look at due from my tutor I knew he was familiar as I have looked at him before, his work is very good, he knows how to experiment with logo work and how he can experiment playfully with typography which is something I feel like doing more of, as I feel like sometimes I may not be as playful as id like to be with my typographic imagery with how he creates the object of the thing he's trying to say but mainly was because In today's tutorial I went through some of my work with Anne and she said I should look at his work after I have recently looked at another artist (Norma Barr) which I mentioned some geeky references that made Anne think of him. Here is what I found of him below.

Such as the following images below.  (I found these via google images)

Herb Lubalin's piece: Families

This piece of typographic graphics by Herb Lubalin: Families. I like, it is simple and works well I love how he has played with the letters 'ili"in the word, creating a little family using tittles as the heads and the rectangles arranged at different sixes representing the mother, the foster and the child, its a clever play on words because the word says families so he's made a little family within the type,

Herb Lubalin's Type design, Beards

The thing I like about this piece Is how he's given the man a beard by literally writing the word beard but designed to look like a beard. The thing I really like about this graphic designer is his use of playful type design, it's very unique, quirky and clever.

In terms of target audiences I feel his work can work for a varied audience, I feel it would capture the eye of teens and young adults the most and budding designers.  I think it is a brilliant idea with how the word beard is the man's beard, it just works really well.

The missing link, Herb Lubalin

I love how Herb Lubaliun plays with negative space in this piece and how he plays with text, because it took me less than two seconds for me to identify that says the missing link I think it is a very clever design approach. Which is something I feel like I should learn more about in future projects in more in-depth detail as it is an area I really like but feel that I should try looking at this method more.

Cough: Herb Lubalin

With this piece, I wish I found sooner as it would of been brilliant resource for the newspaper aspects of this project as well as the summer project, because of it saying the word cough and I love how the text is all in fectuals as if the word cough is coughing and spending its germs.

Spasm: Herb Lubalin

I really like how this design has been created it is created in a very unique genre, where the second S is spasming where its suggesting a drug can prevent the spasm but the same time can cause a spasm, I thought the clever effect of the second S was just unbelievably clever and what I really liked about it is the first is- is very bold and 100% opacity whilst the second S is the polar opposite where although it Is legible and you can see its an S it is still tell it is in a spasm. I also find this colour scheme of this piece is basically the same as what I have been looking at for my campaign where I have sed black, white and red, like Lubalin has, his work has inspired me to try creating Billboards and posters in this aesthetic. For the target audience of this piece I feel is very similar to what the posters I have created using this colour scheme which I feel is from young adults and teens to perhaps mid ages adults.  Such as this one of mine below where I have experimented with Type and created my artwork using the same colour scheme as Lubalin has in this design he's made.

My Poster/Billboard design inspired by Lubalin's artwork

I have experimented with the type by typing menopause but saying Me NO || to experiment with text and try to be a bit more playful like what I have learnt when I have looked at the works of Lubalin such as his piece, Missing link is quite similar.
